You are a good person. You know that going green is the only way to go. You have a whole rooftop begging to become a solar power collector.
But you can't do it because it's too darn expensive! Everybody can relate to this frustration.
Dark Wood Bookshelf
You call around to solar power installation companies and every single quote is well into five figures. You do the math and the thing won't pay for itself for 12 years (maybe seven if you live in a sunny climate). The kids need piano lessons. The spouse needs shoes. So much for the solar power project, right?
Not so fast, Slick. You are not getting off that easy. There are ways to do this on the cheap, chief among them, doing it yourself.
"But I can barely assemble a bookshelf from Ikea!" you protest.
Be that as it may, you can learn these skills simply by doing the thing. Here are a few pointers on building home solar power systems without breaking the bank:
Use re-constituted or recycled materials. Google around for it and you will find that manufacturers have plenty of slightly imperfect solar cells that they are looking to get rid of on the cheap. For a few hundred dollars, you can build a nice array of panels if you're willing to do the work of assembling the cells yourself. Build your own cells. Yes, it can be done. Solar electricity is generated when sunlight knocks electrons free from various types of extremely common materials. Learn about this, and you can build solar panels even more cheaply than in method 1 above. Do it over time. Rome was not built in a day, and you do not need to convert 100 percent of your home power needs to solar overnight. Invest in the basics -- an inverter and the materials for you first panels -- and build out from there. Add a panel every six months and within a few years, you will have a whole array -- and you will have hardly noticed the expense.
Building your own cheap solar power system is a clear case of knowledge (literally) being power. Once you know how to build your own solar panels and assemble your own solar array, you can do it. That's the truth.
You can keep looking wistfully at that bare roof or you can take action right now. It's entirely up to you.
